The New Sengkang Connection: Commutes, Better Life
SENGKANG, Singapore - The daily commute in Sengkang is starting to feel very different for thousands of residents thanks to the completion of key upgrades under The New Sengkang Connection project. What used to be a final stretch home from the MRT station often involving a long walk in the heat or a long wait for a packed feeder bus is now becoming one of the fastest and most seamless commutes in the North-East region.
The Sengkang Connection project does not rely on building a massive new line. Instead it focuses on connecting everything that already exists. The Land Transport Authority has integrated the North East Line, the Sengkang LRT East and West loops and key feeder buses like services 110, 156 and 372 into one coordinated system. At the heart of it are than 16 kilometres of new sheltered linkways that now connect HDB estates, schools and shopping centres such as Compass One directly to the stations so residents can walk home without having to deal with traffic or the weather.
For families the biggest change is how easy it has become to walk or cycle for that last kilometre. The upgraded cycling paths under the North-East Green Loop are now wider fully shaded and separated from cars making them practical for use and not just weekend exercise. In the mornings you can see students cycling to Nan Chiau High School elderly residents riding to the market at Rivervale Plaza and parents with strollers using the park connectors. New bike‑share docks near Buangkok and Compassvale stations have made it normal to combine cycling and public transport.
Real‑time information has also cut down a lot of the uncertainty that used to come with commuting. Most bus stops and LRT platforms in the Sengkang Connection area now have integrated display panels that show everything in one screen. You can check when the next LRT train is arriving, whether your feeder bus is two minutes away and how many bikes are available nearby. Residents say they no longer have to rush or wait aimlessly because they can check the MyTransport.SG. Decide whether to walk, cycle or catch the bus.
The difference is felt most by those who commute every day. "I work in town and I used to leave 20 minutes just in case I missed my connection " said Mr. Farhan, 32 who lives near Sengkang East. "Now the connection is almost immediate. I tap out at Sengkang MRT. My bus is already there. I get home faster. I have more time with my kids in the evening." Many other residents shared that they are now making short car trips because the public transport option is finally more convenient.
According to planners this is the goal of Singapore’s car‑lite strategy. When the first and last mile is easy people are less likely to drive for distances, which helps reduce congestion around Sengkang Central and the bus interchange. While peak‑hour crowding and occasional LRT disruptions still happen the Land Transport Authority says the Sengkang Connection model has been successful and will be used as a blueprint for towns such as Punggol and Tengah with more improvements, to linkways cycling infrastructure and accessibility set to roll out through 2027.
